Sonar detection & positioning system

Connected ultrasonic ranging, actuators and a Python polar dashboard into a detection and positioning system.

2025.02 — 2025.04Sensing, calibration and visualization

My role
Hardware and communication integration, sensor calibration and interpolation, Python visualization and mount design.

Background

A University of Liverpool embedded-systems course project connecting an Arduino Uno, HC-SR04 sensor, servos, motor drivers and a Python polar dashboard.

Goal

Integrate sensing, actuation and visualization, and reduce positioning error through calibration and structural alignment.

My contributions

  • Integrated Arduino Uno, HC-SR04, servos and motor drivers.
  • Implemented the Python/PySerial polar dashboard and inter-module communication.
  • Calibrated sensor response and used interpolation to improve position estimates.
  • Designed mounts in Fusion 360 to improve structural alignment.

Approach

  • Connected sensors, actuators and the visualization dashboard, checking inter-module communication.
  • Calibrated sensor response and used interpolation, comparing positioning error before and after calibration.
  • Controlled mounting alignment through mechanical design.

Results

  • Resume-reported inter-module communication error rate was below 3%.
  • Resume-reported positioning error decreased from ±4.8 cm to ±2.3 cm.
  • Resume-reported mount alignment error was below 1°.

Metrics come from the resume. Ranging distance, repetitions, error statistics, communication-error definition and collaboration boundaries remain to be documented.
